So, what is SD-LAN?

So, what is SD-LAN?

The 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 in which this technology is grounded is the Software Defined Networking (SDN), which in its essence, is a technology that decouples the control (of the traffic in a network) from the actual forwarding of the data (in the network). The value of this is that it allows to manage the whole network from a central (often cloud-based) environment by defining general policies valid for the whole network; this, in turn, allows for a simplification of the management as there is no need to access every specific device or server to load or change the local configuration. Imagine you have one hundred devices in your network, you only need to configure one central control instead of configuring each device one hundred times, and each time with different parameters while adjusting the interdependencies with all other neighboring devices – a difficult, error prone and time-consuming task! Furthermore, centralization allows for automation, which further simplifies and accelerates the work of managing the network.

The 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗸 is the SD-LAN itself, which brings the characteristics of software-defined networking to local access networks. The hardware could be considered here and, in our visualization, would define the shape of the tree – such as a deciduous tree with multiple widely spread branches, or a conifer tree with a main trunk and minor branches).

The 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 are the components of the SD-LAN solution: the wired and wireless networks, which typically are further branched into multiple virtual local networks, the central controller, and the hardware.

The 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 are the features of the SD-LAN, which – depending on the actual solution – include centralized management, automation, identity-driven access, dynamic bandwidth, self-healing and self-optimization, micro-segmentation, analytics, APIs and various security features.
